Did you know it’s possible to eat healthy and save money? Here are a few simple things you can do:

At the grocery store, buy seasonal fruits and produce. Food that’s out of season, costs more money grow, with the use of greenhouses and chemicals, and preservatives to ensure it doesn’t spoil when it’s being shipped from far-off places.  All those costs are passed on to you!

Secondly, eat less meat. Everyone knows the cost of a pound of beef is far more than the cost of a pound of beans. So a few times a week, swap meat for other low-cost sources of protein, such as beans, grains, tofu, or even nuts.

Also, focus on leafy greens like kale, chard, collards, spinach and broccoli. These are some of the most nutritious and least expensive things you can buy.

You might even consider joining a food co-op.  Don’t worry, there’s no tree hugging involved. Food co-ops are made up of groups of people who pool their resources to get low-cost, high–quality (usually organic) locally grown fruits and vegetable.  Here are a few:
