  1. Whoever came up with this Belt on the Shelf idea obviously cares nothing about children and finds the idea of whipping a child with a belt quite amusing. Each time this trash has come up on my Facebook news feed, I have posted how disturbing and upsetting this idea is. Children should NEVER be hit, period. Research has shown that physical punishment of children can cause serious physical and emotional damage to children. And all too often in this country, physical punishment escalates to child abuse which can cause severe injuries or even death. A Mommy website should be promoting methods for Positive Discipline and Gentle Parenting, NOT advocating threatening to whip a child with a belt or encouraging whipping a child with a belt. It is VERY disturbing and upsetting to see something like the Elf on the Shelf, which was designed to make children happy at Christmas time, turned into some dark, threatening message to instill fear and trauma in children’s lives. And equally as sad and disturbing is to know that many adults who see Internet trash like this will think its a perfectly acceptable way to “discipline” their children. Do some research on the epidemic of child abuse in this country and read some of the heartbreaking stories of innocent children who are critically injured or murdered each day during “discipline” sessions involving “spankings, whippings, beatings, etc. Then, maybe you won’t think your little “Belt on the Shelf” message is so amusing!!!

  2. Actually, I think it’s kinda funny. I think “originally” it was posted a little differently and it has something to do with the way kids were raised back in the 70’ies. So though I do understand “Donna’s” point, I’d also be inclined to believe she is Under 45 years old.
